New Gallery on the Block: Marc Straus

The gallerist Marc Straus has opened a second space in the Tribeca Gallery District — 4000 square feet at 57 Walker, which he now has in addition to his gallery on Grand Street. The space formerly had the David Lewis Gallery, which closed in August after three years on the block.

The gallery opened in 2011, focusing on new and overlooked talent. For example, following her first exhibition at the gallery in 2021, Anne Samat, whose work is pictured below, has been the subject of five solo museum shows. Other artists, such as Hermann Nitsch and Sandro Chia, found new audiences and attention after gallery exhibitions. The gallery currently has a roster of more than 25 contemporary artists from 18 nations.

Straus was for many years a collector of contemporary art, often at the early stages of artists’ careers. His collection has had 13 museum exhibits. He was formerly professor of medicine and chair of oncology at New York Medical College, and practiced medical oncology for 35 years. He and his wife, Livia, founded Hudson Valley MOCA in 2002.
