A golden retriever saves lives on White Street

Mac the golden retriever helped save his owners — or at least gave them their first alert — during the fire that ravaged a cast iron building on White on Jan. 22.

Taylor Middleton Scavo, a real estate agent who is featured on the Netflix show “Selling the City,” lived in the building when the fire broke out and now, along with all her neighbors, is living in temporary housing. It was her dog who got them up in the middle of the night — the FDNY was called at 11:45pm.

“Our dog @goldenmacnyc is a hero,” she wrote on Instagram. “His barking woke us up and alerted us to a fire in the building…we are safe and grateful our neighbors, their kids and pets are also safe…We are eternally grateful to our Tribeca community. And thank you to all the friends and everyone who has reached out and offered various types of support.”

When we exchanged messages this week she said she’s been providing guidance from the sidelines for neighbors, but the goal post keeps moving for when people can move back in. Right now it looks like it will be at least six months. The Fire Marshal told me yesterday that the cause was electrical and building wiring. The fire also displaced The Journal Gallery, Asya Geisberg gallery and Oscar Smith’s O-D Studio.

“Many neighbors, especially those with children, signed new leases altogether,” she said. “It’s very sad. No one wanted to move.”
