Tribecan and longtime NYU dermatologist Evan Rieder has opened his own practice in the neighborhood, 36 North More Dermatology, transforming the former Downtown Pediatrics space into a relaxing den of tranquility — no surprise for a doctor who has a dual degree in psychiatry. In fact, he was a psychiatrist first before pursuing both medical and cosmetic dermatology.
“The vast majority of my practice is dermatology but it is psychologically informed,” Evan said. “I understand that human appearance has deep roots in our psychological experience — for me it was essential that I keep my hands in both.”
He went to Dartmouth for religious studies, Bryn Mawr for a post-bacc, University of Pennsylvania for med school, and NYU’s School of Medicine for two residency programs in psychiatry and dermatology; he then spent the first seven years of his career as a full-time faculty member at NYU. (He is in his 40s.) There are not many doctors in the country with the dual residencies — he’s thinking he is one of just three in the nation with those credentials. He also spent a year working on auto-immune conditions at the University of Pennsylvania before med school.
He was eager to start his own practice in part to get out of what he called the “patient mill.” “We were expected to see tons and tons of people and they were not given the time and space for their needs.”
The office has been carefully designed with textures, music and lighting — he wanted a high-touch environment that didn’t feel like a clinical experience, creating an environment that affects how patients feel. (Really, you will not recognize the place and from the outside it looks like a furniture store.) The art on the walls is almost all from local galleries.
The practice offers both medical dermatology and cosmetic dermatology, as well as some mind body techniques to help patients get past psychological issues: “Some people are manifesting stress through their skin: acne, psoriasis and hair loss are just a few examples,” he notes.
Tribeca was the obvious choice for the practice — he can walk to work (he has a young family and has lived here since 2016). “And I can be extremely available to clients,” Evan said.
