Seen & Heard: Speed dating at Best Friends Animal Society

VALENTINE’S ADOPTION EVENTS
Sorry, but I had to run that picture (I drop off all my picky cat’s rejected items at Best Friends, so of course have to then send pictures of the kittens to my daughter). The shelter is waiving adoption fees from Feb. 14 to 17, and they are hosting two Valentine’s events: you can foster an animal for an overnight sleepover (supplies and food provided), or do a speed dating event on Saturday, Feb. 15, from noon to 3p. The shelter is on West Broadway just north of Canal.

HONORING DAVID BOULEY TODAY IN DUANE PARK
The Times reports that Tribecan Nicole Bartelme will create a non-profit for culinary, nutritional, agricultural and environmental education in memory of her husband, David Bouley, who died last year. To celebrate its launch, she will have a three-foot apple carved out of ice at Duane Park at 4:30 today, next to a bench dedicated to David and within view of three of his restaurants. “Apples, which filled the entryways of Mr. Bouley’s restaurants, were his symbol, and visitors are invited to place apples on and around the sculpture,” The Times said.

OTTERNESS FROG IS REVEALED
Even after the scaffold came down at PS 234, this guy was still boxed up. Glad to see he’s back in the light.

ALEXANDER HAMILTON PLAZA IS COMPLETE
More pics soon in daylight, but I see the plaza created by BNY is now complete. Definitely and upgrade…

  1. Yesterday MasterChef David Bouley was honored in Duane Park. Nicole Bartelme created an event that felt like old Tribeca coming together: the park surrounded by apples that represented the many iterations of Bouley’s restaurants entrance on various corner. Complete with a sculpted ice apple. Nicole said, ” Even if you didn’t have the chance to dine at Bouley what he left behind is a bandwidth of resonance, an inflection to buy and blend ingredients together, organic food for the best health.” The creativity of the new David Bouley Living Pantry Foundation is welcomed in a time where David’s legacy can help further define our food culture.

  2. I was glad to see the Frog revealed. Tom Otterness dedicated this to PS 234 after 9/11. The school was displaced until February 2002. The symbol is supposed to be mean Welcome Home in Japanese – but I will leave that to others to correct me, or explain it. But when to children returned – they were welcomed. Also, if you noticed, it is the Anna Switzer School Yard. She lead our school through that difficult time. Both of them deserve our thanks.

  3. The Apple ice sculpture in Duane Park is a remarkable remembrance of one of our own – Chef David Bouley. His restaurants in Tribeca were legendary and integral to the neighborhood he loved. The smell of the baskets of apples in the park brings backs amazing memories of visiting his establishments and getting to meet the legendary Chef. The new non profit established in his name – David Bouley Living Pantry Foundation – will ensure his attention to ingredients and health continue forward. Please stop by the park and enjoy the apple.

  4. Hermoso y merecido homenaje a nuestro gran chef David Bouley. Tierra fértil, alimentos organicos y buena salud era su mission. Te extraño mucho mi gran maestro DB ❤️❤️🍎🍎.
