I’ve heard that Wells Fargo is coming to the southwest corner of Chambers and West Broadway — and while I am never all that excited about a bank, thank goodness someone wants to turn the lights on at that prominent corner. It’s been empty since before the pandemic, and with the two subway entrances there, it’s better to have some action behind the corner door.
It seems the bank is expanding its retail footprint, in addition to the 12 banks/ATMS in Manhattan already.. They are adding a couple dozen branches in Chicago, opened their first branch in Queens this past fall, in Little Neck, as well as one on Long Island in January.
The Capital One branch there closed in February 2020. There were also concrete blocks at that corner and a sidewalk bridge that stood for a while thanks to Local Law 11, so things are looking up.
(Now if only we could get rid of the useless video advertising on top of the subway entrances, things would really look smart.)
