Planters for Barnett Newman Triangle, the neglected wedge of hardscape on Sixth Avenue that neighbors have recently adopted, and PS 234’s auditorium curtains made the short list for the lump of money Councilman Chris Marte has dedicated in his “participatory budgeting” account. Neighbors have until Sunday, April 6, to vote.
NB: Voting is open to everyone ages 11 and older who live in or have a special connection to the district. (HOWEVER, you need to have a smartphone to get a verification code.)

I tried to vote tonight and got through the phone verification and received a message that there were no capital projects in Chris Marte’s district. I’m hoping its a glitch that will be fixed by tomorrow.
I’m all for green-ifying Barnett Newman Triangle. However: $250k just for planters? That seems insane. Shouldn’t the cost for planters, with plants, be more like…$2.5k, if that? For $250k, I think we should be able to buy one of the Broken Obelisks and install it in the Triangle.
Similarly, curtains cost… $250k? Are they made of gold leaf and encrusted with diamonds?
Jungle gym and play mats – $1 million?
Can anyone explain these prices? Inquiring minds want to know.
The problem here is that the relatively new building on the southwest corner of White and 6th was given special privileges to built there in exchange for funding the renovation of the triangle. They never provided that funding. They should have paid for a full renovation.
Don’t disagree. Let me ask…
I love the idea of greening that triangle. It could be a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. It’s been neglected for such a long time.
I’m a proud PS 234 alumna, but it would be deranged to spend $250k on curtains when there are several other schools listed who need that money for more substantial expenses – and don’t have a powerful PTA and an entire food festival set up to fundraise for them!
Vote for PS 142, Richard R. Green, PS 42 and PS 124 instead.
Yes. And “deranged” is an excellent descriptor for all these prices. Seems to be the city is being price-gouged by whatever vendors or contractors are providing proposals for this work. Time to get proposals from reasonable providers before going forward with any of these projects. With $1 million, surely multiple (perhaps all) of these projects should be completable, with lots of money left over for other projects.
Agree with Elizabeth! Shout out to PS124 as kids play on concrete that is so old and crumbly! They are in desperate need for a playground, it is just bare concrete – not equipment, nothing.
May I cast a vote for play equipment improvements for PS 124. I was involved in getting an upgrade for the school equipment 30
Years ago and it’s really past time to t replace what’s there.
