Sidewalks around Finn Square will be replaced

The sidewalks around Finn Square, the traffic triangle just south of the Franklin Street stop in the wedge between Varick and West Broadway, will finally get its sidewalks replaced, and I hope that means the iron wickets will also get rehabbed.

The Department of Transportation said it received community requests about the condition of the pedestrian island and coordinated with the MTA (?) to replace the sidewalks over the next few weeks.

They really are a mess so it is a worthwhile effort. And hopefully that allows the Friends of Finn Square to move forward for a robust planting scheme for the island.

Until 1998, Finn Square was a flat concrete paved space. Then the space was developed through GreenStreets, a joint program of the Parks Department and the Department of Transportation. The Friends group was founded not long afterwards.

The triangle was dedicated in 1919 to Private Philip Schuyler Finn, who was killed in action on March 7, 1918, while serving in World War I. His father, Daniel E. Finn, known as “Battery Dan,” was a Tammany Hall politician and Democratic leader of Lower Manhattan.

The Friends of Finn Square is grateful to all who helped advocate for this needed change. Next step is to get the fencing replaced. The Horticultural Society is helping with the plants and foliage, thanks to a generous donor.
