Nosy Neighbor: Is Hobby Lobby taking the entire second floor?

F. wrote: “I have a question about the space Hobby Lobby is taking. According to this site (https://www.ripcony.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/270Greenwich_MP_Generic_20230815_V01_JY.pdf) the approximate 70,000 square feet is both the former Barnes & Noble and Bed Bath & Beyond combined. Just wondered what you thought.”

So I was pretty certain that Hobby Lobby had taken only one half of the upstairs, and this is how I got to that:

  • The entire two-story commercial space at 270 Greenwich is 236,000 square feet, including Whole Foods, according to this listing.
  • Whole Foods has 69,000 square feet downstairs.
  • Crain’s and the Commercial Observed said that Hobby Lobby leased 70,000 square feet.

Doing some quick math, that leaves 97,000 square feet unaccounted for. It doesn’t seem like T Mobile, Archive Wines and Band of America could eat up that much…

But the listing that F. found clearly shows that Barnes & Noble had 37,196 and Bed Bath & Beyond had 34,376, which gets us closer to what the business papers suggested: 71,572.

Safe to say that Hobby Lobby has the whole second floor. We will know for sure when they open!

  1. Any updates as to when Hobby Lobby is opening?

  2. Just a reminder for readers of a few of the egregious/crazy things Hobby Lobby has done…. and this is by no means exhaustive:

1.) Refused to provide insurance for contraceptives for employees

2.) CEO smuggled over 5,000 artifacts out of Iraq

3.) Requested exemption from an Obama administration policy that banned employers from discriminating against job applicants on the basis of their sexuality

4.) Kept stores open in the height of Covid because the CEO’s wife had received a “message from God” to do so

The anti-women anti-LGBTQ+ policies of this company are certainly not a fit for this neighborhood. Let’s all keep that in mind the next time you need a last-minute ball of yarn : )

    • You are not the Mayor of Tribeca. Aren’t you now doing exactly what Trump does. Forcing people into your ideologies.

      • I don’t think Sara is forcing anyone into an ideology. She merely posted facts; citizens can ignore them or read about how Hobby Lobby operates. Then everyone can decide if they want to shop there or not. What Sara posted may not be what you want to read, but they are facts that should be made public if one chooses to do so.

      • Bringing in Trump?? Oh brother.

    • Thank you for this summary. It’s more important than ever to know where our money goes. This is a horrible company and when you support it, you put money in the pockets of evil people.

    • Thanks for posting this. It’s hard to believe that there are that many people in tribeca who support all those policies and crimes.

    • These bullet points are hysterical! No employer should be punished for not paying for their employees contraception!
The great thing about America as you have so many choices. You hate Hobby lobby so much? Then don’t shop there it’s as easy as that.

This is not the only place downtown where you can buy beads and yarn.

    • Wow, Karen, stunningly ugly paintings. But hey, I guess you’re part of that ‘tolerant’ generation—as long as everyone falls in line with your opinions, right?”

      • Actually no, “Reality Bites”, I am totally tolerant of other points of view which are expressed with respect and agreeably, especially if they are expressed by someone who does not hide behind a screen name.

      • Thanks to those expressing their opinions using their names.

    • Thank you for offering alternatives. The reality of supporting gross intolerance is despicable.

    • Thanks Heidi for your comments. But a question — I googled Go Crafty but could find nothing. Where is it?

  4. No tolerance for intolerance.

Thanks, Heide, for keeping up the good fight and for the links.

    • “Heide was calling Hobby Lobby Christian fascists—I’m guessing that’s what you’re referring to with ‘no intolerance’? Her post was edited after she got a reality check.”

      • No, that is not why. I edit posts for anything that strikes me as libelous, since I will be the one sued. It has happened twice already.

  5. Thank you, Sara and Heide. I was aware of their refusal to cover contraception and the Supreme Court decision, but I was not aware of the other issues. I will NOT be shopping there. Michael’s is an easy trip from Tribeca, located on 6th Avenue between 22nd and 21st.

  6. We have the Jenga building and, now, we have the MAGA building.

  7. And, Micheal’s sign is less of an eyesore. I’ll be going to Chelsea.

  8. The panic over this is hilarious. Meanwhile, Hobby Lobby sits atop a Whole Foods, which is owned by Amazon. Who of course have also done unethical things. Every large corporation has, simply put. But I don’t see people picketing those who choose to buy gluten free croutons from Jeff Bezos. Bit hypocritical, no? By all means do your research and shop at a small business whose actions you can track. But don’t shame people for buying supplies at a new reasonably priced store in their neighborhood, just as you don’t shame them for shopping at Whole Foods (which of course you shouldn’t – Whole Foods are now the cheapest grocer in Tribeca since Food Emporium closed, and therefore the only really accessible local grocer to those of us who are from here and don’t have Tribeca Money).

  9. Instead of having the great bookstore that once stood there, we now have this. I give it 2 1/2 years.
