In the News: The GMA folks take Tribeca

NEW NEIGHBORS IN SOHO VISIT TRIBECA
Because their studios are now in the newly completed Disney HQ on Spring and Varick, the Good Morning America team sampled neighborhood hotspots as part of a feature last week. Included: Hudson River Park and Piers 25 and 26, Square Diner, J Train fitness, Dominique Ansel Bakery and the Ear Inn.

ARRESTS AT FOLEY SQUARE PROTESTS
ABC News covered the protests against ICE last week, where the crowd of several hundred marched through Tribeca and ended at Foley Square. From ABC: “Officers ultimately made 86 arrests in Foley Square and nearby Federal Plaza. Of the arrests, 34 were charged with crimes including assault, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration…Police officials say that during the later protests on Tuesday, demonstrators threw bottles at officers, threw traffic cones and garbage into the roadway. Amid the chaos, video captured what appeared to be federal agents firing some sort of smoke into a crowd of protesters — a move that seemingly escalated tensions. So, what started with federal agents engaging in civil enforcement ended with city police tackling civil unrest.”

CONGESTION PRICING GETS A STAY
Crain’s reported (last month — sorry!) that a federal judge blocked the Trump administration from “shutting down congestion pricing or retaliating against New York transit projects before the toll’s fate is decided in court…The case won’t be settled until October at the earliest, meaning the toll on most motorists entering Manhattan south of 60th Street will remain active at least into the fall. The toll has generated $216 million in its first four months.”

ESSEX CROSSING TO GET NEW MUSEUM
A bit far afield, but within a quick bike ride (and it seems like a big deal): a new museum called Canyon will open in 2026 in Essex Crossing, the development near the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge, according to Artnet and the other art pubs. Created by MASS MoCA founding director and a collector, the museum will have 40,000 square feet dedicated to immersive art experiences, video, sound, and performance-based works as well as a performance hall for 300 and a piazza with a cafe, bars, and full-service restaurant.

  1. Essex Crossing new museum?
    40,000 sf?
More restaurants where there are so many?
Generating more vehicles (construction, delivery, service) and congestion in a small area, and cementing hyper-gentrification…

    Feeling pretty cynical

  2. The protests against ICE at Foley Square as reported here seems awfully biased against the protesters, one of whom was Brad Lander who was arrested in a most undignified way. ICE officers, usually masked and unidentified by name tags or uniforms, are arresting folk violently and without warrants. If you are reading this I hope I’m preaching to the choir.

  3. I agree, I was taken aback to read ABC’s biased language against the protesters – presented as a quote used to describe the protest. The Ice agents present as masked thugs, grabbing lawful immigrants after they dutifully attend their assigned appointments. It is horrifying that this is going on in the US. The protesters are doing their duty to protect the constitution and the rule of law.
