Life And Trust has closed in Fidi

The immersive experience called Life And Trust — installed by the folks from Sleep No More in the landmarked building that was the City Bank-Farmers Trust Company Building, aka 14-28 Exchange Place, 61-75 Beaver Street, 6 Hanover Street, and 16-26 William Street, closed permanently in April. I actually went to buy a ticket and saw this message on the homepage:

“We want to express our deepest gratitude to the thousands of audience members who stepped into our world, and to the extraordinary cast, crew, and creative team who who brought this production to life. Your passion, talent, and belief in the magic of live performance made this ambitious journey possible.”

They are also offering refunds for anyone who had purchased tickets.

The coffee shop they created in the base of the building — Conwell Coffee Hall — is still open. It took me a few to figure out that was all part of the fiction they created for the theater experience — what they called “a tale of money, sex & power.”

Sleep No More, a similar immersive experience where the guests were masked and intermingled with the performers who were in a version of Macbeth, has also closed after 14 years in Chelsea. The producers, Emursive, now have a similarly spooky setup called Speakeasy Magick at The Overlook Bar in the Flatiron.

  1. I would have gone if it wasn’t so expensive. Just seemed to be very pricey for a show like that. I’m sure the spaces are very cool so maybe a new concept can be launched there.

    • The spaces are cool. I used to live there for some years right after the conversion, and though most of the spaces were closed off, they weren’t really that hard to access, and the building staff didn’t really care about sneaking around.

I’d love to think of something more accessible than an immersive theater event to get the spaces open to the public again.
