Seen & Heard: 34 Walker looks topped out

34 WALKER COMING ALONG
The development of the new 34 Walker, which was built over the former Belle Reve site and will include the two buildings on both the Walker and Church side, is coming along. That looks like it’s topped out to me? See the rendering here.

PSYCHIC READINGS FOR DOGS
In the only-in-NYC department, the Walker Hotel is offering a package that includes a personalized psychic reading to “tap into your dog’s inner world.” Turns out the hotel has a Pup Psychic in Residence sponsored by Happy Tails, the new doggy day care on Duane.

FOGO DE CHAO OPEN AT WORLD TRADE CENTER
Fogo de Chão, the Churrasco restaurant chain founded in Brazil in 1979, has opened at the World Trade Center, with the entrance on Trinity Place. There’s an all-day happy hour starting at $5 with handcrafted cocktails, premium South American wines, and shareable dishes such a $10 Picanha Burger and more.

LOCAL BOYS DONE GOOD
The brothers behind Holy Water and Grand Banks, Tribecan Alex Pincus and Miles Pincus, have opened yet another venue called The Yacht Club — this one on the 10th floor roof of the Starrett Lehigh Building in Chelsea — on the river and 26th Street. It’s spectacular. Great spot for a big group since there are several seating areas, including ones not even pictured here. Totally worth a field trip. NB: the entrance to the elevator is on the Westside Highway.

  1. I think 34 Walker has 2 more flights to go. The setback level as well as the elevator/mechanical level.

  2. What an amazing transformation for this remarkable building! I worked part-time in there during my college years in the late 1970’s. Its gritty commercial roots were very present, especially the railroad siding that became the High Line. The building can be seen hulking above the waterfront in the Poitier-Cassavetes movie “Edge of the City.”

From these photos, this relaxing oasis puts to rest the feelings that the Starrett Lehigh used to evoke for me, taken directly from Carl Sandburg’s “Chicago”: Stormy, husky, brawling. At least on the 10th floor, that’s no longer true. Good luck!

  3. the shell of 34 Walker does look to match the rendering without more floors to go.
