Friedmans new space on Greenwich will be an Italian concept

One of the managing owners of the Friedmans restaurants around the city — including the one in the Goldman breezeway — has taken the Caliza space on Greenwich and will convert it into its new Italian concept: Casa Louie.

Jonah Phillips and a business partner opened the first one on West 37th in February. This will be another iteration, with an expansive pizza menu along with Italian specialties and pastas, many of which can be ordered gluten free. (The recipe for the pizza crust, Jonah Phillips said, is a secret.) Friedmans is family owned, and Jonah’s sister has celiac disease; as a result they have been developing gluten free menus for years.

And like most Friedmans restaurants, the hours are also expansive: they are open 11:30a to 10p daily uptown.

W42St did a story on the origins of the restaurant when they opened: “We really wanted to create a sourdough crust that was a hybrid between the Napoletana and the New York slice,” Phillips’ partner explained. “We wanted to combine those two staple, iconic pizzas and create our own.”

The original Friedmans opened in 2009 in the Chelsea Market and even then the menu was designed to be a gluten-free safe haven. The company has developed its own flours for pancakes, waffles and fried chicken — and now pizza and pasta.

More TK.

  1. Il Mattone, Il Giglio, Gigino, and now Casa Louie. Am I leaving any out? Is the restaurant in the Sarabeth space going to be Italian too? Will Greenwich be New Little Italy? Anyway, it’s good to see the unshuttering of spaces. BTW, Pixie (Nail) salon is great and beautifully renovated (next to Teakwood Thai Chop House). And looking forward to Chopt. The Reawakening of Greenwich St.

    • I’m with you Martine and Im Italian. Enough Italian restaurants in Tribeca. Looking forward to Chopt as well!!!

    • Don’t forget Locanda Verde! Personally I love Italian food so I don’t mind having many options, but variety is great as well

  2. What the neighborhood lacks is a true deli or diner (memories of Socrates) as in where do you buy a tomato or get a newspaper etc Everything is oriented towards the Citibank masses and nignttrippers seeking destination venues – thank goodness for Buenvento

    • Agreed. And Benvenuto has the BEST iced tea! And– believe it or not — potato pancakes!!! And their Reuben is good too. I hope that Chopt doesn’t put a big dent into our beloved Benvenuto.

    • If you are going to reference Socrates shouldn’t you be referring to Benvenuto as that new place in the Studio Deli space?

  3. Was so excited when I heard they were coming. Was hoping for the Chelsea market version. I’m with you on not needing another Italian.

  4. Don’t understand the Italian restaurant hate (especially a gluten free friendly differentiation).

Would the rest of the commenters like another coffee shop or MedSpa to open in the space??
