Tribecan Allison Flanders was working so hard and so much for the six years after business school in management consulting that she — by her own admission — had become consumed. “Even when I was home I wasn’t present,” she said. “And I had a 1 and a half year old. If you can’t be present at the park on a Sunday morning, then what are you doing?”
That’s when her husband told her to wake up. “This is your life,” he said. “How do you want it to look?”
“And it was so obvious that it was organizing,” Allison said. “It’s something I did for my family and friends all the time — I’m good at it. And we are in New York City — everyone has space constraints. Buying stuff is the easiest thing to do and getting rid of it is not.”
She quit her job before she lost her nerve and within a few months had started Org.nyc. Her first client was a media company on Fulton, which had six storage rooms on three floors that were a disaster. It took a week of work to organize those rooms, the firm’s pantry and merch areas. She’s been busy ever since.
Her approach is a combination of Marie Kondo and The Home Edit, Allison said, decluttering, sorting, and moving stuff out for both residential and commercial clients. She uses a variety of strategies depending on the client, and works with a partner so stuff can go out the door as quickly as possible. Efficiency is key.
“No one wants to do this every month or every week,” she notes. “They want to get the job done in a couple of days and move on.”
Rates are by the hour ($180/hour) and sessions range between four hours for a “touch up” to six to seven hours for a “full transformation.” Consultations are free.
She’s aware that this is a sensitive job that can even be quite intimate — and it requires an effort to understand the client and build trust, almost like a hospitality business. “I really don’t take that lightly.”
But she also keeps her eye on the prize: moving stuff out. “Nothing will be more valuable than the value of the real estate beneath that thing, especially in this neighborhood.”
I always love seeing the newest businesses in Tribeca featured here! What a beautiful story. I’ve heard great things about Allison and org.Nyc – a good reminder that I need to reach out!
