Washington Market Park, which has been closed since June so the Parks Department could replace the pathways and fix the drainage in the lawn, will reopen on Wednesday.
The asphalt paths that loop around Washington Market Park have been repaired and replaced, thanks to funding from 2024 from Councilmember Chris Marte. The drainage system under the lawn was repaired simultaneously, which will hopefully limit the flooding on the west side of the lawn. And the wire benches that came with the park originally in 1980 have been replaced with the Parks Department classic Worlds Fair benches.
The Friends of Washington Market Park used its own funds to repair and repaint the gazebo. And the Parks Department repaired the pavers surrounding the gazebo.
Since work was going on all summer, the window for resodding the lawn has closed. The Parks Department will mow what’s there for this season; next year the park will be resodded as usual in the spring.
Looks incredible!
Thank you to all of the volunteers of Friends of Washington Market Park and the city for all your tireless efforts to make this a special place for our community!
We really appreciate it!!
I love to see the park reopened! We’ve missed WMP this summer and are excited it will be open for the school year to start!
