The Friends of Finn Square, who manage the triangle at the meeting of Varick and West Broadway between Franklin and Leonard, is seeking funds to add a better fence along the perimeter of the area to protect plantings and in general spruce things up.
The sidewalks around the triangle were restored by the Department of Transportation earlier this summer. And those look great! The Friends has recently added shrubs, ground cover and flowers with the help of The Horticultural Society of New York, which was supported by an anonymous donor.
The current wickets are 12 inches tall and have been damaged by snowplows over the years. The new fence — demonstrated by that mourning dove below — would be 30 inches tall and sturdier.
The estimate is $43,500 and they would like to raise it by December 1.
The next goal will be to focus on the health of the trees and new plantings. Tribecan Signe Nielsen, a founding principal at Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects, consulted with the group pro bono and estimated the initial cost at $25,000 for that project.
Neighbors can donate through the Friends website or send a check payable to Friends of Finn Square, c/o Jessica Raimi, 6 Varick Street, Apt. 7A, New York, NY 10013.
