INTER_ on Broadway and Canal has closed permanently

INTER_, the immersive exhibit that took over 415 Broadway — the First National City Bank building on Canal — has closed permanently after nearly three years. Thanks to J for the tip.

Now at 415 Broadway there is The Haunted Bank installation by the people that brought INTER_, running through November 2. Perhaps the installations will change seasonally?

INTER_ opened in November 2022; at the time founder Scott Yo said the idea was for the show to grow and evolve. The space was created by Jobi, a family business that launches brands, with architecture by Brooklyn-based Colberg Architecture and exhibits by the Brooklyn-based Chemistry Creative.

The company was renting the space directly from Walgreens, the previous tenant of United American Land, which owns the building (and many of the properties along Canal). At the time Yo told me they took a 15-year lease and have already signed a lease for another space in a tourism hub in the US. “We are here for the long run,” Yo said. “We feel it has potential for national or international expansion.”

But success seems to elude that building — as striking as it is. “415 Broadway is a stellar location,” J. noted in his email. “The corner of Canal and Broadway has incredible pedestrian traffic and most of it is tourists. It’s the hawkers of fake handbags and watches and drug dealers that ruin it.”

  1. Hey, here’s an idea! Chase should buy the building and put a branch there!

  2. As “striking” as that location might be, you’ll never have a successful business there while the streets are flooded with illegal vendors and covered by knock-off goods. Cleaning that up would be a huge boon to that entire area.

  3. The politicians who control NYC do not want to displace the fake pocketbook salesman so that corner will remain a blight until the City gets new leadership which seems extremely unlikely. I gave up on the City after filing many complaints and seeing nothing change so I looked for Federal help and filed an ICE report as most of the salesmen appear to be illegals. Again, no action.

The salesmen use Lispenard St. as a toilet. The smell of urine and feces is so bad that I try to limit how many times a day I go in and out of my building. When I confront one of the salesmen in flagrante they all say, “There’s no other place to go.” That’s not true since I”ve never encountered a fat tourist in shorts and baseball cap in the act.
