This awesome tip from Tribecan Jolene Howard: she discovered a free VHS rental spot underneath the Alamo Drafthouse — Kim’s Video, which since 1986 was in Alphabet City and several Village locations, including Mondo Kim’s on St. Mark’s Place, until closing in 2009.
Turns out Alamo acquired the collection in January and has made it free to the public. (Yes, I still have a VHS player so we can watch the culturally inappropriate Disney version of “Swiss Family Robinson” from 1960. Also, my aunt in Montana was the last Netflix DVD by mail customer of all time.)
The legendary collection has found a new home at Alamo Drafthouse and is ready to rent – for free.
“The white whale of movie collections has landed at Alamo Drafthouse Lower Manhattan and we’re making it available to you fine folks for free,” Alamo wrote on its blog. “That’s right – Kim’s Video is back!
“Kim’s opened out of a former laundromat but quickly outgrew the space, eventually growing to multiple locations with nearly 55,000 DVDs and VHS titles. This monumental collection was celebrated by film lovers around the world until Kim’s tragic closure. In 2009, their founder, Yongman Kim, took the only offer for the collection that would keep it intact, and so began the long journey to Salemi, Italy.”
The Alamo acquired it from there. There are 15K titles available for rent, for free, from their location at 28 Liberty. There are thousands of deep cuts, hard-to-find titles and rarities spanning genres such as “Roller Skating Classics,” “Monkey Business” and “Nunsploitation.”
“You know, the essentials,” they wrote.
The Alamo also has DVD players and VCRs available for rent. And they will show some of the rare finds on the big screen as a part of our monthly Kim’s Video Presents series, curated by Nick Prueher of the Found Footage Festival (and longtime Kim’s Video member).
This is really really cool. Thanks for sharing and love that they’re making them available for free.
Alamo has been hit or miss as a business, but happy to support them if they do more programming like this (including actually paying to see movies there)!!
