Nosy Neighbor: Why are the bricks missing around the gazebo all the time?

I checked in with the Friends of Washington Market Park and the answer is kind of a bummer: kids are digging them out. The stone pavers, which are part of the park’s original design (they are at the entrance as well as the sprinkler area) are set in dirt and have sat there for decades — until recently when kids started digging them out.

The Parks Department replaced some with grout by bringing in the department’s stone masons, and the Friends replaced some with a sand-type sealant that reacts with water.

But they can’t keep up with the small little vandals!

The park staff is collecting the pavers so they can be replaced eventually. But, the Friends said, we are on a long queue with the Parks Department to get the masons back…

  1. Can we please tell the grownups to keep their eyes on their little ones and stop them? Alternatively, would I be able to tell those little ones to stop without being yelled at by their grownups?

  2. What does that mean: “Every time I go there” ??
Like on Monday the bricks are gone, and also on Tuesday? then also on Wednesday??

    • There have been sections of bricks missing for a while. Two have been fixed, but now another area is pulled out and it continues to get bigger as kids pull more pavers out.
