Crowd Sourcing: Where can you find a notary around here?
H. wrote: “I was wondering if it might be useful to crowdsource where people have found reliable notaries downtown. All my usual go-tos no longer offer the service — and everyone I’ve asked says the same.”
I was in the same boat this summer, and after getting turned down by both my banks (Citi and Bank of America — and hello, what good are the branches if you can’t use a notary??) and getting a too-high estimate from Downtown Manhattan Mobile Notary (If my recollection is correct, was over $100) I stumbled on the UPS Store on Nassau Street. They were great, and are open seven days. You can message them in advance.
Any other ideas around here?

Most notaries don’t have a storefront but they are out there. There’s also “The Notary Giant” who has an office on Wall Street.
I think all UPS Stores offer notary service.
Not all do anymore, actually. The one in tribeca does not! But the one way downtown (forget which street) pretty reliably does.
The UPS on Canal doesn’t.
Not all of them do, sadly, even though many indicate this on the website. For example, the one on Park Place doesn’t do it.

My husband says there is a place at the rear of this office lobby at 20 Vesey St. He’s been several times.
The courthouse at 60 Centre Street has free notaries in the clerks office in the basement.
Sian Lam, 265 Canal St. #508, she charges $5 cash.
There is another one on the 2nd floor of this building perhaps it’s the one @Lulu mentioned.
Last time I checked the UPS on Canal and the Chase branches north of Chambers had no notary.

UPS Store on Park Pl is quite reliable, they have a nominal fee. I’ve also had luck with the TD bank on Broadway, and I don’t even have an account there.
I hate to say this, but I’ve started using the $20 online services. They are really easy to do after you have uploaded your information. All your information is stored, and it’s scanned and emailed to you. It’s more expensive, but if you are only doing it a handful of times a year, it’s easier than spending an hour trying to find a notary.
Same! I used notarize.com recently. It was super easy.
Almost every bank branch will have a teller or personal banker who is also a notary. They also are not supposed to restrict these services just to customers of the bank. Citibank HQ at 388 Greenwich Street has a notary most days.
I went there, plus BofA, plus Citizens! No notaries.
We also use an online service called notarize.com. They do a video call and you sign the document in real time. It’s so easy, a little pricey but available anytime!
I have my accounts at Chase and 1 branch didn’t have a notary and an officer at another branch told me they only notarize Chase documents. Thanks commenters for all of the great suggestions.
After spending an hour going to all the banks I could think of — only TD had a notary but only a couple days/week — I used http://www.notarize.com and it was so easy I’ve used them a couple times since then. They’re available 24/7 and charge $25 per notarization.
Notaries have to notarize, if asked. Also, did you know NYS imposes personal liability on the notary? No wonder banks decline to notarize even for account holders.

TD Bank on Broadway and Reade Street offers notary service free to TD customers.
I used to go to the TD on Broadway and Reade for notarization and they took care of me even though I was not a TD customer. But the notary is not there every day, so it may not be convenient.
I go to my local bank Chase, make an appointment and they are glad to provide the service with no charge.
Toni, which branch? I’m a Chase customer too, and I was recently told that neither the branch on Broadway & Murray nor the one on Greenwich & Murray has a notary.
Not in Tribeca but Chelsea Royal Care Pharmacy on 9th Ave between 19th & 20th has a notary. Call ahead to check his hours.
