Exciting news: a children’s bookstore has opened in Tribeca! I don’t think I have to explain to any of you how rare this is. And we can boast as well: we now have TWO independent bookstores, with Words on Warren joining The Mysterious Bookshop on Warren just east of West Broadway. Even if you don’t have young readers in your household, stop by. It’s super fun and, if yesterday was any indicator, packed!
(A shoutout to the coop board of 52 Warren/122 Chambers, who have not only made sure Philip Williams Posters can stay in the neighborhood, but made room for Words on Warren because they wanted that kind of tenant.)
Tribecan Jean Maeng took 1500 square feet of 72 Warren this past spring; she opened on Saturday with the shelves stuffed with books and the aisles packed with shoppers. I spotted several kids walking down the street with a pile of new books in their hands.
Jean has been willing this to fruition for years — in fact the idea has been germinating for decades. She has curated book collections for businesses and families, did some pop-up book selling here and there, but was always looking for a way to open a shop. She finally found it on Warren.
As a child, she moved all over the world (she went to six different elementary schools) since her father was a journalist. The books were the one thing that always came with her. “It was a comfort,” she said.
“My favorite thing to do was to go to the bookstore with my dad,” said Jean, whose own kids are 14, 12 and 7. “It’s just always been a part of my life.”
The shop will be open seven days, 11a to 5p, and will offer classes for kids from 9a to 11a daily.
