Tom Dixon, the British designer of lighting, furniture and objects, has taken the space at 186 Franklin, between Hudson and Greenwich. The sign says coming this fall; I am awaiting details from the mothership.
This is an excellent addition to the Tribeca Design District.
The company’s shop moved from Howard Street to a two-story, 6700-square-foot space on Greene Street in Soho in 2018; it seems that is closed temporarily…
Dixon founded the company in 2002 and the brand is now represented in 90 countries and employs 100+ people worldwide, with hubs in London, Milan, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hangzhou. (I have a pair of chunky marble candlesticks that I adore and that I snagged ages ago with a deep deep discount at the MoMA design store.)
From his website: Dixon “rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as a maverick, untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture. While working with the Italian giant Cappellini he designed the widely acclaimed ‘S’ Chair. In the late 90s Tom became Creative Director at Habitat and rejuvenated the brand while maintaining Terence Conran’s vision of enriching everyday life through simple, modern design. In 2001, Tom was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty the Queen for his services to British design. In 2014 he was awarded ‘Designer of The Year’ at Maison & Objet, Paris. In 2019, he received a silver medal for Best Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and in the same year, was awarded the prestigious London Design Medal at the British Land Celebration of Design Awards.”
