Halloween in Washington Market Park — and more to come

The Friends of Washington Market Park held their annual Halloween events this past weekend — and they were a hit as always, drawing hundreds of folks for both a display of artistic talent and enthusiasm for what has become Tribeca’s favorite holiday.

The Pumpkin Carving Contest on Saturday evening had 70 entries and winners across five categories plus a new one: master blade, for the pro carvers. Judges were NYC Parks Manhattan Borough Commissioner Tricia Shimamura; Councilman Chris Marte; Nico Victorino, the principal of PS 150; Hanne Larsen, the co-founder of Downtown Dance Factory; and Tory Weil, the president of the Friends of Bogardus Plaza. Special surprise guest was NYC Parks Commissioner, Iris Rodriguez-Rosa, who was on hand to hand out trophies.

The Queer Big Apple Corps led the parade as usual — I always get teary, they are so good. They have been leading the parade since 2012. Shout out to the 1st Precinct for blocking the streets.

Plus the folks at Jay and Greenwich have set up their spooky display in front; residents report that their block is on the list of NYC Trick or Streets street closures for Friday, October 31, and the party there starts at 3. The noise permit goes till 10p.

And Halloween is still going to be its usual wild event on the streets of the neighborhood, with nearly all the local retailers playing a part.

Have fun, kids!

  1. What time do stores start handing out candy on Friday?

  2. Really important that we all support our local stores.

    Consistently and all the time.

Actually would be great if parents can also remind their kids that it is local stores providing Halloween candy.

  3. a reminder to parents and care givers: Duane Park Patisserie gives homemade treats to trick or treaters from toddlers through teens. we ask that adults come in to buy- and not ask for free treats! thank you in advance
