Seen & Heard: The Seneca Chief on Pier 26

SENECA CHIEF ON PIER 26
Gene Schafer sent this overhead shot of Pier 26, with the historic boat the Seneca Chief, which in 1825, carried Governor DeWitt Clinton to the inauguration of the Erie Canal. The boat was here to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the canal. The Times has the backstory there: The name of the boat was “a reference to the Indigenous nation that, together with the rest of the Haudenosaunee (or Iroquois) Confederacy, had dominated western and central New York for centuries. Farther back in the procession was another boat, called Noah’s Ark, which unlike the Seneca Chief, actually carried members of the tribe. They shared the vessel with eagles, deer and a bear, as part of a dehumanizing sideshow.”

Laurence, in the photo above on the right, presented him with the award.
