BATTERY PARK CITY RAZES PUBLIC ART
The Broadsheet has been following the plans by Battery Park City to raze “Upper Room,” a site-specific sculpture by Ned Smyth installed nearly 40 years ago on Albany Street. Oddly, this is the quote from the authority’s president on the webpage that describes the art: “From coastal resiliency and sustainable green practices to the preservation of affordable housing, world-class public art, and vibrant, year-round programming in award-winning public spaces, Battery Park City leads the way in many of the measures that makes cities livable.”

ELIZABETH STREET GARDEN CONVERTED TO PARKLAND
In case you follow this story (I do not as a matter of TC practice, but our City Councilman is involved), Hell Gate reports that Mayor Adams turned the Elizabeth Street garden site into parkland, making it much more difficult for the incoming mayoral administration to carry out plans to build affordable housing for seniors on the site.
Very sad about the destruction of Upper Room. As the linked article notes, this sets a very bad precedent. There should have been a way to save this work.
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! THE RESULT OF NO COMMUNITY INPUT. IS THAT THE WAY IT IS DONE THESE DAYS??
