If you have even 10 minutes this week, wander into the Issey Miyake store — its last day on Hudson will be Friday, December 12. First, the staff there is lovely. Second, there’s a big sale! But most of all, this is the final chance to see the interiors designed in 2001 by Frank Gehry, who died last week at 96. In the past, the store did not allow pictures — that’s why they are never in the TC Shop-Local Gift Guide — but with the whole operation packing up, it’s fair game.
You can certainly see the nexus between Miyake’s designs and Gehry’s when you walk through the store.
“When I first saw the empty space, I couldn’t help but ask no one other than Frank Gehry,” Miyake told Domus magazine in 2001. “I didn’t ask him because I wanted someone to design an interior. I asked Frank because he is someone whose unique vision can capture and project the reflection of the organic qualities of nature into a space. He is also someone whose work creates movement, light, and energy.”
The company will open in a new flagship store on Madison Avenue in April, and be online only in the interim.
The Row, the fashion brand founded by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, has taken the space, according to the fashion blog Puck. (Thanks to E. for sending the story.)
But the waves of titanium that define the interior space will not be part of The Row’s new setup. Most of that will be sent back to Japan to the Miyake archives; a bit of it might get installed into Madison.
