Seen & Heard: An all-time record at Bubby’s?

BUBBY’S ALL-TIME RECORD??
This is not meant as an offense — I love Bubby’s — but we all keep talking about it in astonishment: how? why? The lines at Bubby’s continue to grow — in this photo from Robert Ripps it goes down a full block of Hudson and around the corner at Franklin! Any guesses on wait time?

LOOKING FOR LUNCH
L. spotted this juvenile — and here’s the big debate — red-tailed hawk or Cooper’s hawk keeping a watch on the action at Hudson and Laight.

  1. Looks like a red-tailed hawk to me!

  2. Red tailed hawk.

  3. To me the most shocking part of the Bubby’s thing is that it does not matter how rough the weather is outside…….. Customers are unfazed. I couldn’t ever wait on that kind of line for any restaurant in the world. Maybe that’s the definition of a NYer

    • Exactly. There’s no sense in waiting in such lines, when there are so many great restaurants in NYC…not to mention the default option of cooking at home.

      • Not to mention…if you want to try it so badly, you can walk in pretty much at-will anytime Mon-Fri.

        Katz’s has a similarly mind-blowing line.

The power of TikTok is remarkable…

  4. The Bubby’s line is probably 90% tourists as it tends to get long whenever there is some sort of holiday. I passed by this morning around 8:30 and the line was almost to Franklin… on a Monday!

    • Definitely mostly tourists. I’ve taken to telling them that there are still pancakes at lots of other places that don’t have a line. I guess this is what they get for planning their trip (and wasting their precious time on this earth!) around what someone online told them is a “must”.

Still, I’m bummed that what was once our nice neighborhood breakfast spot is essentially inaccessible to us now. Especially stings since we no longer have Kitchenette, Gee Whiz, Socrates, Imperial, etc etc etc. :(

  5. It’s an American Kestrel.

Earlier this summer, when the bird was much younger, it ran into a window on a building on Laight between Hudson and Greenwich. We sat with it for about an hour before it could fly on its own. We called the New York Audubon Society, who referred us to the Raptor Society. They were the ones that let us know it was a kestrel. We often see it around Collister and Laight – a real local!

  6. Funny to remember Bubby’s,as I did the very first logos on the glass,of a cup of coffee…They had apple pies in the window, and you could park on Hudson. El Teddy’s was there, with the rocks, and glass, and liberty,on the roof. Bubbys had waffles, and big chocolate chip cookies, and its country vibe.

  7. I can’t wait for Friedman’s to open so that the neighborhood can do out for weekend brunch again.

  8. Regarding Bubby’s, it could be the Devil Wears Prada effect. People re-watching or first seeing the movie in advance of the sequel, then wanting to go to the restaurant where Adrian Greniers character worked.

  9. The Bubby’s line never fails to astonish me but … I love it nonetheless. With so many empty storefronts and long standing neighborhood shops closing, I’m happy for Bubby’s to have all the queues and tourists. I’m sure the foot traffic drives value for other local businesses (eg L’Atelier coffee shop next door) and we all benefit from the vibrancy the crowd brings to the neighborhood.
