Tom Dixon, the British designer of lighting, furniture and objects, has opened a beautiful showroom at 186 Franklin, between Hudson and Greenwich. It’s worth a stroll through, even if you are not in the market. Folks are lovely too.
And of course this is an excellent addition to the Tribeca Design District.
The company moved from a 6700-square-foot two-story space on Greene Street in Soho that they opened in 2017; this space on Franklin, they said, is brighter, lighter and more fitting of the brand — it better expresses his work.
Dixon, 65, founded the company in 2002 — he is a self-taught designer — and the brand is now represented in 90 countries with hubs in London, Milan, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hangzhou. He spent years working with Italian design firm Cappellini; was creative director of Habitat in the late ’90s; snagged his OBE from Her Majesty the Queen for his services to British design in 2001; was named designer of the year in 2014 at Maison & Objet, Paris; and was awarded the prestigious London Design Medal at the British Land Celebration of Design Awards in 2019. It’s a healthy career.
I find it uncomfortable when a store does not display prices, but they promised the tags — specifically designed of course — are stuck in the warehouse and coming soon.
Dixon launched his “Plump and Fat” line of sofas just last year, and those are on display in several fabrics — mostly Kravat. And there’s plenty of pret-a-porter too, which is fun for what is essentially a showroom. (I have a pair of chunky marble candlesticks that I adore and that I snagged ages ago with a deep deep discount at the MoMA design store. There’s a stackable version of those in the store now that are even cooler.)
Make sure to check out the bathroom for more lighting features.
