HOT TUB FOR THE SNOW
The Department of Sanitation is using giant vats of hot water set up in Fidi (and other parts of the city) to dispose of the snow, since it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. DSNY hauls our snow to Broad and Water, drops it into giant hot tubs and then sends it into the city’s sewer system. They can melt 240,000 pounds of snow every hour.
REMINDER ON GROUNDHOG DAY AT DUANE PARK
The Friends of Duane Park will hold its second annual Groundhog Day bar crawl on Monday, February 2, from 6 to 8p. The Beverage + Bites Cocktail Crawl is a fundraiser, but it also follows the free ice carving event in the park starting at 3p. All Groundhog Day attendees who visit each location on the crawl will be eligible to win a pair of tickets to Dinner on Duane, the park’s annual fundraising dinner in September. Tickets here.
THE HUDSON FROM ABOVE
My pal is working on the new tower across from Pier 40 and got these great bird’s-eye shots of the river frozen over. And another friend shot the Tribeca piers from the top floor of 105 Duane. NYC Ferry service has been suspended across all routes due to the ice. See updates on that here.
Thanks for the reminder, Pam. Everyone, we know it’s beyond cold out so if you’re feeling cooped up on Monday night, join in the fun! Meet your neighbors, visit some local businesses (there are 8 on our crawl, meaning 8 beverages + 8 bites!), and support our beloved Duane Park.
