Seen & Heard: Chip City is temporarily closed

CHIP CITY IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED
E. noticed that Chip City is papered up with a sign that says it is temporarily closed for maintenance. The website confirms it, with no schedule for reopening.

MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION HOSTS NEXT MEETUP
The Tribeca Alliance Merchants Association is hosting its next merchant mingle on February 23 from 6 to 8p at Fred Astaire Dance Studios, 291 Broadway, Suite 900. The event is free and open to the public — a chance to meet the neighborhood’s small business owners. RSVP here.

A BIG SALE AT 70 VESTRY
The top residential deal recorded last week and noted by The Real Deal was $57 million for penthouse south at 70 Vestry — 7,800 square feet. Yowza.

COULD THE CITY LOOK GROSSER?
It’s rough out there. Only hoping that once the snow goes, there will be some sort of effective street sweeping…

  1. The south PH at 70 Vestry was formerly Tom Brady’s and then Lewis Hamilton became the owner. Any word on who the buyer is?

  2. COULD THE CITY LOOK GROSSER? And a shoutout to all dog owners who somehow believe they get a pass for picking up poop once it snows. What’s worse … grey/black snow drifts or piles of dog sh*t …

    • agreed! Never seen it look so bad.

    • My theory is that this is mostly from the dogwalkers that walk 4-5 dogs at a time and not from individuals that live in the area

    • Let’s not blame ALL dog owners (or dog walkers). Majority, like myself, are responsible and respectful of the environment and our community. Thank you very much.

    • Dog poop all over sidewalks is horrible. I know of NO other cities that have this problem.

Why does it happen and so bad in NYC ? !

Suggestion: dog owners should have to pay annual license fee that is used to fund sidewalk cleaning.

      • All an annual fee would do is give them “justification” to leave it. “Well, I’m paying for someone else to do it so why should I clean it up?”

        How about some aggressive fines?

    • Really unbelievable to see it all.

Today saw a poop pile right at the edge of a bus shelter.
Dog parent would have had to purposefully brought the dog to that spot to poop.

    • AGREED! It’s like playing a game of “The Floor is Lava” out there!!!

  3. I agree with MME. Most of us dog owners are responsible. We don’t understand what’s going on with the dog 💩. It’s disgusting.

  4. I think the same people who bring their dogs into Whole Foods thinking it is their right to do so are the ones who make the decision to not pick up after their dogs.

    • Dog owner here. I agree that we have an awful problem that does seem to get worse when there is snow present. I don’t think it’s the dog walkers. I think it might be the nannies and kids who really don’t relish the job (not that I do!). The annual license fee noted above for clean ups is not a bad idea. Another one would be to have the local doggy day care centers clean up at least around their locations, as they profit from dog walking.

I also want to second the comment about selfish dog owners bringing their dogs into Whole Foods, hiding behind the “service dog” protection. It’s not just that dogs are dirty and sometimes use the store floor as a bathroom; it’s that they take up a lot of room and block shoppers from shopping. Sometimes they get into little skirmishes with other dogs as well. I saw one guy with two large German Shepards in the checkout area recently. (Obviously no one needs two service dogs, so he was blatantly just being a jerk). People with shopping carts and strollers were trying to navigate around the dogs and someone ended up stepping on one of their tails. Perhaps Whole Foods should have a dedicated line for people with dogs that they are required to use. I bet the dog owners would start leaving them home.

  5. I was in the CVS on church and Murray last year; someone let their dog poop INside the store.

  6. Dog owner here.
I agree and am appalled at the condition of our streets. For a long time, everyone was so good about picking up after their dogs and all of a sudden it just stopped.
Greenwich St between Harrison and Chambers is especially disgusting.
Please, please respect our neighborhood and neighbors.
    You know who you are.

  7. The dog poop is really bad.
But even worse in other parts of NYC – saw a photo of a Bronx sidewalk which had poop all over.

Yesterday saw a neighborhood resident (don’t know her – just see her around) let her dog pee on a school.

It is especially incredible to see the disregard and entitlement in neighborhoods where people are educated and affluent and claim to care about issues like the environment.
(Also, dog poop on the street ends up in waterways – not good)

It is DT attitude – do whatever I want and whenever and screw anyone else.

  8. Don’t think it’s the dog walkers, I have seen them picking up after their dogs.
I think it’s the rich entitled snobs that don’t think they should pick up their dog’s poop. Working on Church St, I have to be careful going out to lunch and coming/leaving work.

Absolutely disgusting! I wish the responsible dog owners and residents of Tribeca would call out their nasty neighbors!
