The New York State Department of Education has recently announced several changes to the upcoming 2016 NYS ELA and Math tests, however the exams will continue to assess students proficiency towards New York State Learning and Common Core standards (CCLS).
Grade 3 and 4 Test Prep at Reade Street Prep offers group tutoring for state standardized exams in Math and English Language Arts to grades 3 and 4. Our program’s goal is to provide both the academic assistance and test-taking techniques to alleviate anxiety and ensure optimal performance on these standardized tests. The instructor will implement a standards based curriculum utilizing workbooks, practice exams, and supplemental testing materials to better prepare students for the exams.
To prepare for the ELA, instruction will target reading comprehension skills needed to read different types of texts; understanding the importance of language, word choice and ideas; and support in thinking about passages and its meaning.
In order to do well in mathematics, students will integrate the Standards of Mathematical Practices including: practicing making sense of problems, modeling in math, and attending to precision.
Key features of our program include:
• Demystifying state testing scoring process and test development process
• Providing relevant, standards-based practice
• Tips for answering multiple choice, constructed response and extended response questions
• Exercises to sharpen skills and time management tips
• Direct lessons that focus on the most important ideas for each grade
• Developing good habits that will help students in everyday life, beyond the tests
Instruction will be led by a local educator with over 14 years experience in NYC Elementary Public Schools, serving in a range of roles including a classroom teacher, an Instructional Coach for English Language Arts and mathematics, and Library Media Specialist. The instructor has an extensive knowledge of the NYS testing program, as a test coordinator, state/district scorer, and direct student instructor. A graduate of Vassar College, with a Master’s of Science in Elementary Education, as well as extensive studies in Library Science and School Building Leadership, the instructor’s extensive background in teaching diverse populations has strengthened her dedication to supporting all learners in the development of essential knowledge, deep understanding and skills; as well as, continued to develop each students ability to work at high levels of thought on authentic tasks.
