In the News: New Salon

••• The “not your typical” salon coming to the second floor of 109 W. Broadway (where Delphi restaurant was and alluded to here) must be getting closer to opening, seeing as how Masque Magazine noted that there will be an open house on Sept. 21 for nail technicians who might want to work there.

••• Brooklyn Vegan says that Gilt City had a deal for a concert by Blonde Redhead at Tribeca Grand. I signed up for Gilt City but I never remember to look at it. If anyone out there ever sees anything Tribeca-related on the site, please let me know.

••• “Last week, New York City announced its official plans for commemorating the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11: Zuccotti Park on Liberty Street, between Broadway and Church Street will be the site of a ceremony in which family members of those who died will be joined by construction workers, architects and engineers who are participating in the rebuilding of the World Trade Center complex in reading the names of victims.” (Broadsheet Daily)

••• The Weather Channel sent this alert (sorry about the caps but I’m not retyping it): “WITH THE APPROACH OF A NEW MOON ON WEDNESDAY…TIDES WILL BE ASTRONOMICALLY [Maybe not the best word? —Ed.] HIGH FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. TIDAL DEPARTURES OF 1/2 TO 1 FT IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED FOR MINOR COASTAL FLOODING THRESHOLDS TO BE MET AT THE BATTERY. THE INCREASING SOUTHERLY FLOW WILL CONTRIBUTE TO TIDAL PILING THIS EVENING HOWEVER…ONLY EXPECT WATER LEVELS TO TOUCH OR SLIGHTLY EXCEED MINOR FLOODING BENCHMARKS AT THIS TIME. HIGH TIDE IS BETWEEN 730 PM AND 830 PM THIS EVENING.” Now I have “The Tide Is High” on repeat in my brain….

••• “A brand-new K-8 school is opening in Battery Park City this week to alleviate some of the neighborhood’s school overcrowding. P.S./I.S. 276, which launched with just kindergarten classes in a temporary space last year, is now expanding into a recently completed $81 million building at 55 Battery Place. Designed by Dattner Architects, P.S./I.S. 276 is the greenest school ever built in New York City.” (DNAinfo)

••• Harrison ex-chef Amanda Freitag is miffed about the coverage of her leaving the restaurant, says Eater. (I wonder how she must feel when she googles “The Harrison,” and sees a blurb about predecessor Brian Bistrong.) The item also points out that new chef (and owner) Jimmy Bradley could (a) not succeed in renewing the lease, which I hadn’t focussed on before; and (b) that he might change the concept. That strikes me as unthinkable: The Harrison remains monumentally popular, at least every time I go there.
