••• Mmuseumm 1 and Mmuseumm 2 in Cortlandt Alley have new exhibits up, and one is really moving. When I was chatting with cofounder Alex Kalman recently, he explained that Mmuseumm’s goal is to investigate the significance of objects—a design museum that’s less about form than about meaning. It made the exhibits seem less precious to me; it gave them more of a point. Mmuseum 2, this season, would’ve been special no matter what: “Future Aleppo—a 4×4 foot section from a miniature paper model city built by 14-year-old Mohammed Qutaish in his home in Aleppo, Syria in 2015. Mohammed, who has lived one third of his life in a civil war that has left an estimated quarter-million people dead and millions more displaced, has been motivated by the destruction he has witnessed and plans to become an architect to help rebuild his ancient city, a UNESCO world heritage site. Mohammed has kept himself focused in his home in the middle of the war-zone by building a model of his vision of the future city.” Below: a detail.

••• Friends of Bogardus Plaza’s annual JazzFest is this Saturday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Besides music, there will be kids’ activities (such as cupcake decorating and face painting), performances by local troupes, and refreshments.
