New Kid on the Block: Consort

Four years ago, having worked at Apartment Therapy and Condé Nast’s Domino relaunch, Mat Sanders (above left) was moving to L.A. to join MyDomaine. At his going-away party, he met Brandon Quattrone, who had been at SHoP Architects and would himself be moving to the West Coast six months hence, to head up SoulCycle’s expansion there. They soon became partners in life and, when side-project interior design gigs grew all-encompassing, business. “I think it was when after doing a SoulCycle founder’s house in Telluride, or one of the two houses we did for Jimmy Kimmel, that we realized we really needed to do this full-time,” says Sanders.

The result is Consort, a “boutique design experience” combining interior design with a retail component. “Brandon is more of the project manager and architect, and I’m more the style and decor,” says Sanders. They opened their first shop, on Melrose in L.A., a year ago, and now their second location has debuted on Duane Street, in what used to be a lawyer’s office. They chose Tribeca because it felt design-focused in a way that reminded them of their stretch of Melrose. “We want to be close to the brands here: Aesop, DryBar, SkinLaundry,” says Sanders. “And the neighborhood has a clientele that would be interested in design services.” They describe their style as “playfully chic,” and the merchandise is an appealing mix of Consort’s custom furniture, handmade and specialty goods, and vintage items.

What’s next? “Something interesting in digital,” says Sanders. “So we’ll probably also open in the Bay Area next year or early 2018.”

P.S. Sanders and Quattrone have one of the friendliest dogs I’ve ever met. Her name is Poppy, and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch her at the shop.

Consort is at 155 Duane (bet. W. Broadway and Hudson); 646-868-5776; consort-design.com.
