Artists Space Is Moving to Tribeca

From the New York Times: “Artists Space, the nonprofit gallery and pioneer of New York’s downtown art scene that was forced to move from its Soho home last year when its landlord planned to build a penthouse on the building, has found a place to put down roots: 80 White Street. […] The new location, under renovation, is expected to open in 2018.” Artists Space’s forthcoming home will be two floors, totaling approximately 8,000 square feet, and the fate of the Artists Space Books & Talks annex at 55 Walker is undetermined.

80 White, which is at the northeast corner of Cortlandt Alley, is being converted “into mixed use commercial and residential,” although according to the Department of Buildings paperwork, only the top floor will be residential. The natural assumption is that someone from General Tools, which owns the building, is planning on living in the 5,366-square-foot apartment. General Hardware used to also own 79 Walker, directly to the north of 80 White, till it sold last year; as a result, the Art in General gallery had to move to Brooklyn.
