Seen & Heard: In Praise of the Metrograph

••• Tom Hanks is right to be wary of the AT&T Long Lines Building.

••• The Department of Buildings paperwork for the storefront at 75 Leonard mentions a “sales office tenant fitout,” which sounds like a real estate sales office. The tower at 45 Park Place has a sales office across the street (74 Leonard), so perhaps this is for the building under construction at 91 Leonard (a.k.a. 351-355 Broadway)?

••• Friends of Washington Market Park’s annual family-friendly summer concert series starts this Thursday (June 8) with the Jonny Hirsch Band, followed by Rolie Polie Guacamole (June 15), and Astrograss (June 22). All shows are at 5:30 p.m., and rain date info is here.

••• James points out that there shouldn’t be much point in Community Board 1 discussing Pret a Manger’s request for a sidewalk café, given zoning forbids sidewalk cafés on Chambers.

••• Eyeglass brand Dita is opening on Fulton Street in the Seaport District. This would be more exciting, personally, if the company hadn’t discontinued the model I wear.

••• Meanwhile, the L.O.L Kids store on Front Street had closed. (And by the way, there’s no sign of a build-out yet for the Van Leeuwen ice cream shop said to be coming to 224 Front.)

••• I finally made it to the Metrograph cinema (on Ludlow, just above Canal) last weekend—loved it! So exciting that someone was able to open an independent/repertory movie theater in Manhattan in this day and age. I recommend signing up for the email newsletter; the only way to do so appears to be to email list@metrograph.com. Anyway, Adam and I saw Alfred Hitchcock’s Stage Fright (1950), part of a Marlene Dietrich retrospective. As fabulous as Dietrich was, Alistair Sim steals the show. The only clip of him I could find reveals too much plot, so savor this one instead.

  1. Dinner at The Metrograph does not disappoint.

  2. Before an early show at the Metrograph, we like to grab oysters & a glass of wine at Bar Belly, right around the corner.
