Culture and Cows?

Kent, Conn. Kent FallsWhat do farmers, weekenders, long-established local families, NYC expats, writers, financiers, artists, musicians, and three boarding schools full of international students have in common?

They all love Kent, Connecticut—85 miles from Manhattan with Metro-North nearby—the first town in pastoral Litchfield County after you cruise past suburbia. It’s a place that’s peaceful, rural, and real—a small New England town with a subtle New York sensibility—a place where culture and cows co-exist.

Recently named one of the 20 Best Small Towns to Visit in America by Smithsonian Magazine, Kent has long been loved for its inspirational natural beauty. It’s home to waterfall-filled parks, the Appalachian Trail, the Housatonic River for canoeing, kayaking, and fly fishing, with skiing nearby in the Berkshires. A laid-back walking village, Kent is filled with shops, restaurants, and art galleries—a bookstore and a bakery—churches, coffee shops, and a historic covered bridge. It bustles with hometown parades, music, farmers’ markets, and great goodwill. And every summer, there’s the KentPresents Ideas Festival.

Kent—the perfect place to escape and to exhale.

I have lived in Litchfield County for 32 years, first as a weekender and then full-time. It’s spectacularly beautiful here, but I love being able to hop on the train to the city even for just a day. My first real-estate deal was working for Brown Harris Stevens in the 1980s. It was an Upper East Side co-op for $1,000,000, a stunning sum then. Houses are different than apartments, but the clientele at William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty is really quite similar—smart and busy people. I returned to real estate after a marketing career with IBM and later in advertising and television production. I’ve been fortunate to be successful in real estate here as well as in Manhattan including, in 2010, the third highest sale ever recorded in Litchfield County—Stone Acres, a classic manor house on 389 acres in Kent and Amenia, N.Y. You get a lot of value for your dollars here, a peaceful yet inspirational place to be and easily accessible from the city.

Come visit.
