Years ago, when Sébastien Auvet (above), Dilip Hari, and Rakesh Chandiramani decided to open a wine bar, Tribeca was the first place they looked. “We put in eight to ten different offers, but we kept getting outbid,” says Chandiramani. They moved on, and now, with four Vin Sur Vingt wine bars around Manhattan under their belt, they’ve finally made it to the neighborhood.

The latest Vin Sur Vingt is also the smallest: Located in what used to be the Babesta Threads clothing shop, it has two dozen seats at tables and the bar. Auvet and Chandiramani say that the idea has always been to be “real wine bar,” not a restaurant with wine. Food is available (see menu at right), but the emphasis is squarely on wine: 50 by the glass and nearly 300 by the bottle, and all of it is French. The list is annotated with information on which ones are biodynamic, organic, or sustainable. (While there are a couple of beers, you won’t find hard alcohol.) Wondering where it’s all stored in such a cozy space? Beyond the massive wine refrigerator behind the bar, bottles are also kept in cabinets up near the ceiling and under the banquette.

Vin Sur Vingt is open from 4 p.m. to midnight, although that may change to 1 a.m., and for the next few weeks, it’s closed Sundays.
