Seen & Heard: Nonrefundable Reservation Deposit at the Greek

••• I went to make a reservation at The Greek, only to discover that dinner reservations require a deposit of $15 per person, to be applied to your bill. (Pass!) Even worse, it’s non-refundable: “Just as with attending a sporting event, concert or the theater, all sales are final. We cannot cancel your reservation or reschedule it for another night. If you cannot come, we recommend that you transfer your reservation to someone else.” I understand that restaurants hate no-shows, but sometimes one does have to cancel. This is where OpenTable or Resy could be so useful—those of us who always show up (or cancel, as far in advance as possible) shouldn’t have to guarantee a reservation, especially on a Monday night in August.

••• The BMCC pool finally reopens today after a multi-year renovation. You join by the semester, and registration info is here.

••• Midcentury-modern furniture store Industry West is opening on Crosby between Grand and Howard.

••• M. M. De Voe hears that a kosher steakhouse is opening in FiDi.

••• Press release: “The technology service provider ANC announced today that they have installed and are managing a new digital media network at The Howard Hughes Corporation’s new Pier 17 at the Seaport District in Lower Manhattan. Driven by ANC’s LiveSync operating system, the digital media network includes more than 2,000 square feet of 4mm outdoor LED which is integrated throughout the complex. […] All of the displays will be able to feature individual content or synchronize together to act as one canvas across the different locations.” This presumes people won’t all be looking at their phones….

  1. The deposit system seems to be a function of the reservation site they use, Tock. I made a reservation at The Aviary uptown, they use the same system and it also requires a nonrefundable $15 deposit. The Greek might not be aware of this?
