Seen & Heard: Community Boards to Meet on the Jail Plan

••• A truck partly collapsed the sidewalk at 42 Walker, says James.

••• From Community Board 1: “Manhattan Community Boards 1 and 3 will bring together their respective task forces for a meeting with the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit and the NYC Department of Corrections to discuss the Manhattan Detention Complex as part of the city-wide Borough Based Jail System Plan. This important meeting is crucial for preparing CB1 and the Lower Manhattan community for the environmental review process. CB1’s Manhattan Detention Complex Task Force will join CB 3’s task force in asking questions about the proposal as well as the multi-year process that the planning effort will entail. Please note that this will not be a hearing, rather an opportunity to learn about the proposal, ask questions about the presentation, the environmental review materials, and the process moving forward. This session will help inform the discussion to take place at our September 13 Land Use, Zoning & Economic Development Committee where we will discuss a resolution that will be the basis for CB1’s testimony at the September 27 public hearing on the Draft Scope of Work for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement. You can find materials on this proposal and the environmental review process here.” It’s this Thursday, September 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Municipal Building (1 Centre); use the north entrance to go to the mezzanine.

••• Anyone know what’s moving in to 297 Church? (It was a Subway sandwich shop.) It doesn’t look especially high-end inside.

••• The subway elevator outside 30 Park Place is now running. “All it took was for you to post a comment,” says L. The sad thing is that it might be true.

••• Shooting in the Church/Walker area on Tuesday: the TV show “Instinct.”

  1. Diblasio’s complete inability to contain the homeless explosion and criminal activity in tribeca/lower Manhattan is precidence for the argument that this is a terrible idea. Our neighbhood has been going to sh*t since he has been in office. Build your jail in your neighborhood of Brooklyn Billy.

  2. I’ve worked across the street from City Hall for many years and have never seen so many homeless people either sitting outside Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and other businesses with cardboard signs up and down Broadway or people walking on the street or in the train stations until the last 10+ years. Maybe if Mayor DeButthead stayed in NY, he would know what’s going on in his own backyard.

    • Totally agree on the homeless! It is awful to have homeless people lying on the ground, urinating and pandhandling. If anyone has any connection with police and/or CB1, what can be done?
