WHAT’S BETTER THAN A NEW BOOKSTORE??
McNally Jackson Books is open at the Seaport! More to come next week, after they finish construction on the children’s section, which should be up by this weekend. (That’s owner Sarah McNally above.)
AND A PIECE OF SWEDEN BY WAY OF CALI…
Also opening this week at the Seaport, Malibu Farm, the oceanfront restaurant founded by Helene Henderson first in her backyard and then in Malibu, at Pier 17 in its seventh iteration. (There are also restaurants in Newport Beach, Cabo, Lanai, Miami, Montecito and Tokyo.) Some specialties to look forward to: fried egg sandwich, cauliflower-crust pizza, chicken-ricotta burger, a vegan “chop” made with veggies.
CHAMBERS STREET BUILDING GETS OK
In case anyone is following this closely, 121 Chambers was given approval to add two floors at a recent meeting of the City Planning Commission. The building is now vacant, but was built in the 1860s as an Italianate style store and loft building. It will be seven stories with ground floor retail and eight residential units. From New York Law School’s real estate blog: “The applicant plans to build to a height of 93 feet and 4 inches which is three feet and three inches above what is permitted as-of-right for narrow buildings in the special district. Setbacks of 20 feet or more in each new floor on both streets will ensure light and air continues to get on the street from the enlargement and to ensure the additions are not visible.”
TEEN ACTIVISTS LANDS BOAT IN BPC
In case you missed this last week, as I did… Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg made a transatlantic crossing last week and entered the country via the North Cove Marina. Reported the Guardian: “Thunberg came to New York to attend next month’s UN Climate Action Summit. She refused to fly across the Atlantic, however, citing the immense carbon emissions associated with commercial air travel. In turn, she was offered a ride on the Malizia II, a racing yacht owned by Pierre Casiraghi, a member of the royal family of Monaco. The boat contains a large sail but is propelled by underwater turbines powered by onboard solar panels, making it carbon-neutral.”
