STATE INSURANCE FUND BUILDING GETTING UGLIER
Jean sent over pics of the new façade at the State Insurance Fund where sure enough, the state is taking one of the most handsome buildings in the neighborhood and ruining it. Nice work, New York!
ASIAN NEW YORKER CARTOONS AT PEARL RIVER MART
New Yorker cartoonists Amy Hwang and Jeremy Nguyen have curated the works of eight fellow artists for an upcoming show at the gallery at Pearl River Mart open now through Jan. 12. The show features up to 10 pieces each from 10 cartoonists of Asian descent. In its nearly 100-year history, the magazine has published relatively few cartoonists of Asian descent. The first seems to be Warner Brothers illustrator Monroe Leung in 1949 (whose work is included in the exhibition). Leung had few successors before Amy Hwang in 2010. The gallery is at Broadway and Walker.
18 DOWN, YESTERDAY
As seen in the New York Times: “Manhattan neighborhood next to TriBeCa.” Anyone?
142 DUANE COMMERCIAL FOR SALE
G. sent over this listing for Nili Lotan’s current showroom at 142 Duane (the store is at 188 Duane). The designer is staying put till 2028 (she opened there last year), but the 7500-square-foot space (on three floors) is for sale.

On the crossword, it’s weird to me to say that the neighborhood in question is “next” to Tribeca (though technically correct). I always think of it as “above” Tribeca.
It is with sadness I cycle by the NYS Insurance building daily. How the heck did Landmark and the City approve such a horrible renovation? Why oh why?
Blame New York State. The City has nothing to do with it.
