For all of you sweeping little tiny bits of rubber tires out of the corners of your apartment every weekend, relief may soon be in sight. The Hudson River Park Trust has put out a request for proposals for a contractor to replace the turf at Pier 40 as soon as the end of this year. It’s not a job for amateurs: the winner will roll out 3.7 acres of synthetic turf (made of nylon or polypropylene) and replace the drainage system, which, as all you players and parents know, is almost the bigger issue.

The most common fill (the stuff that gives it support and bounce) for turf is the rubber granules we know and love, but there are other options: sand, cork, or things like Durafill — green non-absorbent Microban coating and rounded quartz core mined from the Hickory Formation in central Texas (!) — or Envirofill — an acrylic-coated round sand infused with (yipes) “antimicrobial technology.”
