“Dandara,” a 10-foot tall sculpture from Rubem Robierb’s “Dream Machine Series” has taken up residence in Tribeca Park now through May 4, 2020. The sculpture is a tribute to a transgender woman who was brutally murdered in Brazil in 2017. But it is also a way — as you can see her — for passers-by to take flight.

The wings are fiberglass, span 13 feet and are fixed on a steel and concrete base built for Instagram.

Robierb lives here but was born and raised in Brazil and is now considered part of the Pop Art movement, represented by the same Chelsea gallery that handles Jim Dine, Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons. His bullet and butterfly series really demonstrates that tradition — plus they sparkle.

Robierb is married to WABC Eyewitness News weather anchor Sam Champion. Both have been activists for equal marriage and actively support the LGBTQ Task Force, HRC, GLAAD and Point Foundation LGBT, among many others.
