••• Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard star in 1939’s The Cat and the Canary: “Greedy relatives gather for the reading of the will in an old, dark house on the night that homicidal maniac ‘The Cat’ has been set loose in this rarely-screened, iconic comedy mystery.” It’s followed by Roman Scandals (1933): “A rare screening of a film starring Eddie Cantor […] as a wide-eyed Depression Era dreamer who falls asleep and re-imagines himself as the Emperor’s taster in ancient Rome.” (Friday, 92YTribeca)

••• “Adorable mascot or evil rodent? What does the Year of the Rabbit hold in store? Joanna C. Lee and Ken Smith (co-authors of the Pocket Chinese Almanac) return to decode the almanac’s predictions for 2011 and share a range of New Year’s traditions designed to protect your household.” (Saturday, Museum of Chinese in America)

••• Movieoke—like karaoke, but with movie scenes instead of music—comes to 92YTribeca on Saturday.

••• The 1981 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film, Mephisto, screens at the Museum of Jewish Heritage on Sunday: “Set in the early 1930s, this Faustian tale is about an apolitical, ambitious actor who sells his soul to the Nazis for the opportunity to perform propaganda plays for the Reich.”

••• Of course, there’s a bunch of interesting ongoing stuff, too—such as Marcel Odenbach’s show at Kimmerich, which includes this 2008 piece, “China Collage.”
