Governors Island opened this past Wednesday, and other than the masks on the ferry, the look and feel of the place is much like old times. One crucial difference: the ferry requires tickets ($3) bought online in advance. The island is open weekdays from 10a to 6p and weekends from 10a to 7p.
They are limiting access, and the day is shortened, but it wasn’t hard to get a weekday ferry spot. There is no social distancing on the ferry and masks are required, but once you get there, there’s nothing but space.
All the amenities are available — slides, hammocks, adirondack chairs, bike rentals, pedal cars — along with several art installations, the Urban Farm, and the usual food vendors at the ferry dock and Liggett Terrace. The food options are here.
Fort Jay and Castle William are closed, however, and all public events are postponed until August 31.
