Seen & Heard: Gee Whiz ready to open?

SETTING UP CURBSIDE AT GEE WHIZ
When Gee Whiz founder and owner Peter Panayiotou died from the coronavirus, his family promised to keep the restaurant — which has been on the corner of Greenwich and Warren since 1989 — going even in his absense. Yet it has been closed since mid-March with no signs of opening. So it was with relief that I saw that they constructed outdoor seating in front of the restaurant on Greenwich. No date yet for opening, though R. wrote to say he heard next week.

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING…
That was two F-18 jets that were conducting what they called “a Hudson River fly-by” yesterday. The planes are at approximately 2,500 feet, even though they sound like they are on your roof.

NEW PRODUCING DIRECTOR FOR PAC
The Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center — currently under construction next to the Oculus — announced the appointment of Meiyin Wang as the organizations producing director. (The artistic director is Bill Rauch and the president is Leslie Koch.) Wang served as co-director of the Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival. She was also director of La Jolla Playhouse’s Without Walls Festival for experiential and site specific theater performance.

DOWNTOWN EXPLORER IN CHIEF
The Downtown Alliance has hired what they are calling an “explorer in chief” to document Lower Manhattan. Photographer Josh Katz, who is 23 and lives in Brooklyn, moved here from Virginia to go to NYU in 2013 and since then has created a significant YouTube audience with 375,000 followers. Not sure what he has produced yet for downtown, but his video above is good fun. Follow his work here.
