2020 Shop-Local Gift Guide: Threads II

Part 2 of the guide includes more great gifts in the clothing and shoe department. Pry that mouse out of your hand! And get outside for a stroll and some old fashioned shopping. And check back for more baubles, home goods, stuff for kids…

ALTON LANE
7 Harrison @ Staple
••• Skip the decision making and give a gift card for custom-designed shoes. $275 will cover most styles.
••• You could also get a custom suit, or just grab this flask to put in an old one, which is much more 2020. (The cheese knife and corkscrew combo is a close second.) $34.

MAHARISHI
38 Lispenard | Church & Broadway
••• For the yogis in your life, Yoga Joe in multiple poses. $35
••• Not sure why these are called Snopants, but no matter — they have a side zip pocket and roll up for high waters. $305.
••• Velvet track suit with embroidered shoulders for the ultimate in loungewear. $625 for the jacket; $590 for the pants.

……………………….

NILI LOTAN
188 Duane | Greenwich & Hudson
Minimalism means there’s room to roam.
••• Break your no-camo rule for these pants. $425.
••• For the upgrade on the scratchy Irish knit your mother made you wear on Christmases at grandmas: ivory cable knit sweater. $895.

……………………….

PATRON OF THE NEW
151 Franklin | Hudson & Varick
Yes, yes, they’ve had some action there lately. Dodge the bullets (I know, that’s not funny, but how can I not mention?) for the coolest threads in the neighborhood.
••• Loewe trainers in four colors. $790.
••• And what could be a family heirloom, the Amiri classic leather bomber. $2690.

……………………….

RAG & BONE
228 W. Broadway @ N. Moore
It’s worth visiting just to see the art installations in the dressing rooms. There’s a 3D octopus!
••• Tell the elves this is a total winner: the floppy brim fedora in pecan. $195.
••• And since business wear is out but blazers always look sharp, go halfway in between with the deconstructed wool razor. $595.

……………………….

ROLLER RABBIT
176 Duane | Hudson & Greenwich
It feels like summer in Roller Rabbit, which is why we stayed for a while.
••• Straw earrings, $38.
••• A flowy dress that you will still love 10 years from now, $178.

……………………….

THE ARMOURY
168 Duane | Hudson & Greenwich
These shop guys make serious shopping fun.
••• Bresciani cashmere socks made just for The Armoury, $95.
••• And for the present that will top the charts for many years to come, the shearling coat made in Somerset, where men are men and sheep are nervous. $1950.

……………………….

THE WESTSIDE
349 Greenwich | Harrison & Jay
••• We left with some tie-dyed socks, because they actually look great with floods. $40.
••• And we couldn’t agree on the best high, so we have two, and we must have been hungry since we both had outdoor dining on our minds: P. went with the Apparis fluffy coat, $395. I thought the rabbit purse (dyed in in four rich colors – I loved the forest green) would double as a hand warmer in your lap. $750.

……………………….

J. CREW
50 Hudson @ Thomas
The former men’s suit shop is now the “cozy shop” and I don’t know how it will transform come spring, but in the meantime…
••• Matching black watch plaid pjs, monogrammed for free at the shop here (takes about a week) for the whole fam is cliched but really irresistible. $98 for the adults, $75 for the kids.
••• Not a baaaad idea: Wool & The Gang blanket knitting kit, $111. You know, because there’s a pandemic.

……………………….

THOM BROWNE
100 Hudson @ Franklin
We weren’t supposed to take pictures in there, but we fired off a couple before we were gently scolded. There is no low here at Thom’s joint. But…
••• As if anyone who can afford this shines his own shoes, but maybe if he had this shoe shine kit he would DIY: $3200.
••• What’s more of a must-have than a leather man purse shaped like a rat, especially in the year of one? There are lots of other animals too, including a replica of Thom’s dachshund, Hector. $2500-5500.
