Canal Street Oysters is closed; a new restaurant has taken the space

I’ve been hoping all these months to see Canal Street Oysters return — it was such a great looking space, and with its giant center bar, very lively — but last time I passed the name was off the windows. All attempts to contact the owners — the Martignetti brothers of Broome Street Hospitality — went unanswered.

But now it looks like a new entity will be taking over the space and the business. Later this month, CB1’s Licensing Committee will be hearing from St. Helier Tavern LLC — d/b/a Canal Street Oysters. (I will of course listen in, but was anxious to get this up.) So I am not quite following here? But it seems the business was sold to a new LLC. And I guess they will be repainting the windows, which is of course all good news.

Canal Street Oysters resurrected that prominent corner at Canal and West Broadway in early fall of 2019, bringing some light and transparency back to the building after a series of nightclubs blacked out the windows (maybe you loved the place, but it did nothing for the passer-by).
