11/12: Can Do!

bruce-tolman-oasis-courtesy-cheryl-hazan-gallery••• The opening reception for Miami-based artist Bruce Tolman‘s “Ponds ’09” is tonight at Cheryl Hazan Gallery, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Pictured: Oasis.) This gray, blustery weather must be getting to me, because I looked at the photo of Tolman’s studio/gallery on his website and thought, Maybe I should move to Miami.

••• Art of a different kind comes to the World Financial Center with this year’s “Canstruction” exhibit. From the website: “Since 1992, teams of architects, engineers and students have participated in Canstruction competitions throughout North America to design and build giant sculptures made entirely from full cans of food. This year’s 30-plus entries from New York City will be displayed for two weeks and then dismantled and donated to City Harvest.” Maybe I should build something with canned food…. Nah. It’s up through Nov. 23.

••• Tonight at Tribeca CinemasThe Flying Scissors, a mockumentary—i.e., like Spinal Tap or Best in Show—about people who play rock-paper-scissors competitively (also tomorrow and Saturday).

••• On Nov. 20 and 21, the participants in Tribeca Performing Arts Center’s “Writers in Performance” workshop will present their final project, a meditation on the idea of freedom. According to the release, participants include “Thierry Lundy, a one-man show dynamo from the City of Brotherly Love; Justinah McFadden, a published poet who also happens to be a seasoned member of the NYPD; and Sabrina Michaeli, a spirited travel and pop culture blogger.” The suggested donation is $10.

••• If you notice a sexy Colombian blond with truth-telling hips, that’s just Shakira, who’s performing at the P.C. Richards & Son Theater on Friday. (I’ve been doing some research on the P.C. Richards Theater and hope to have a report soon.)

••• Notice something new around the neighborhood? Please shoot me an email at editor@tribecacitizen.com. Also, if you have any interest in writing, reporting, photographing—whatever!—let’s talk….
