ANASSA TAVERNA IS OPEN
J. sent word that Anassa Taverna, the Greek restuarnt from the Harry’s folks in the former North End Grill space, is open for diners. He caught these pics. More soon when I can get over there. This has been brewing since December 2019, and you know what happened after that. “Everyone has asked us to do a Greek restaurant, but this will be our first,” said Paul Lamas at the CB1 meeting where they were approved for a liquor license back then. His partner in Harry’s is Peter Poulakakos, and at that time, at least, they were teaming with the owners of the existing Anassas on East 60th Street and Astoria as operating partners. J. says the staff getting things started have come from the other restaurants, which is always a help to start with a seasoned team.
JOHN WILLENBECHER AT CRAIG F. STARR
Longtime Tribecan John Willenbecher will have a show at the Craig F. Starr Gallery of works from the 1960s, on view starting Oct. 5 through Jan. 15 at 5 East 73rd. The exhibition will showcase 10 of his box constructions and six related works on paper produced between 1962-67. Most of these seminal works are being shown publicly for the first time. This show marks the artist’s first exhibition in New York in almost two decades and is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue. Donald Judd reviewed his first show of these “unknown games,” made from materials found on the city streets and in junk shops. His work can also be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Whitney, among others. Stay tuned for more.
